A New Age of PC Gaming: Pros and Cons of the Experience
The rise of PC gaming over the last few years has been nothing short of remarkable. Once confined to basement-dwelling basement nerds, PC gaming now boasts an immense following, with reports showing that the market for PC gaming is now worth more than $35 billion. But what is it that makes the experience so attractive, and what are the pitfalls of PC gaming?
Pros
- Control: PC gamers have much more control over their gaming experience, with a higher degree of control over in-game settings and graphical presentation. This level of control is unparalleled in other gaming platforms.
- Performance: On a powerful enough PC, today’s gaming is capable of providing a truly unprecedented level of visual accuracy and quality. For those with the hardware to support it, gaming on a PC can be a truly breathtaking experience.
- Range of Titles: The range of gaming titles available for PC continues to expand and diversify. Indies, MMORPGs, and other titles that may not fit the traditional AAA console market can be found in abundance on the PC.
Cons
- Cost: To get the most out of the PC gaming experience, significant investment must be made in terms of both hardware and software. PCs also require a more frequent level of maintenance due to the more complex nature of their components.
- Cheating: Cheating is unfortunately a major issue with PC gaming, and is often only resolved with strict server administration and/or anti-cheating software.
- Piracy: Unlike consoles, PC gaming offers little protection against pirating. This leads to congestion of the market and reducing the potential for developers to make a fair profit over their games.
So while PC gaming has a great deal to offer, it’s not without its own set of problems. Potential PC gamers should only enter the market with an eye towards the pros and cons of the PC gaming experience, and be aware that there’s no such thing as the perfect gaming platform.
